I was told my grandfather was dying in the hospital, and ran there. When I got to there, he had already died, and when I entered the room, all I can remember seeing is the heart monitor, which had flat-lined.

My little brother and I were trying to get to Hungary from Bulgaria by crossing the river. We walked for seven hours to get to the river. The smuggler said to jump in the water, and I jumped in, but my little brother could not swim. The water was too deep and cold. So, I put my brother on my shoulders, and we got across to Hungary, but my brother was sick from the cold of the river. We turned ourselves in to the police to get medical care.

There is something hiding behind the painting. There is a ghost (“shabah”) behind it. It is the ghost of someone. (Who?) (No answer to that.) It is not me (says the artist), it is another girl who is afraid. The ghost frightens people, but it does not hurt them. (What does the girl in the picture say?) The girl (in the picture) says the ghost came to her. (What does the girl say to you about the ghost?) She told me, so we can help her.

The djinn is not here, it has disappeared. The girl last saw it in Syria. The djinn is gone. “I am afraid of the djinn.” When I was in Syria, I as afraid of it. I am not afraid of it now.

    170627-DG-6271120.jpg
  • "Bad Day" by Hitam, age 17, from Mosul, Iraq (Yazidi). It was a very sad day in Mosul, in Iraq. It lived in Mosul, in the inner city. You can see the airplanes and such, the terrorists were there, that for 2 or 3 hours, they were so many, my father and I and my sister (she was sick), the people were shooting and such, the people we saw, they were shooting, … gives many people in the inner city of Mosul, the terrorists were shooting at the airplanes, 3 or 4 airplanes. There were bombs. My father said, we had to leave Mosul. Behind the house there were terrorists. We had to go to through another house to get away from them. Then, we hit a control point, that controlled who went in and out. We met these others, from a religion is called Sunni, a man who was Sunni, we could not leave because we are Yazidi, the Sunni said he would come with us, we got there, he said go. There were other Yazidis, then they were shooting.
The is my worst day. It was four hours.
We saw fighting between the terrorists and the invading soldiers.
We had our things packed, and went to Kurdistan.
My family did not come with me to Germany.
I think a lot about this day.

  • "Bad Day" by Javed, age 18, from Afghanistan.
I was standing here, and this was a school of childrne, and it was bombed. Everywhere was blood, and people running to here. I was just watching. This was school damaged. It was in Pakistan, Queta, before I came to Europe. In 2015. I was in living there because it was safer than Afghanistan. Yes, I can still smell it, and hear it, and see it. At first, it was really hard to hear, and listen.

The Taliban or ISIS bombed a local school, and I was nearby. I remember the sounds, the screams, the smell of fire and burning children. I still see these things.
